Memorial buying guide

The procedure for buying and installing a memorial in Scotland can be confusing. In our buying guide below we outline the steps clearly to make the process as straightforward as possible for you at a difficult time.

If your family does not already own a plot in a local cemetery, the initial step before buying a memorial is to buy a plot in your chosen cemetery. Once you have done this you can choose the right memorial, inscription and installation date for you. The sections below detail what you need to know for each stage.

Choosing a cemetery

In Scotland, burial grounds are managed by the local authority. Burial grounds in the Glasgow area are managed by Glasgow city council. To buy a plot you must contact the burial ground directly and arrange this. Click here for a list of Glasgow’s larger burial grounds.

Choosing a stone

Once you have arranged your burial plot, you will be able to choose a memorial that is suitable for your needs and the plot you have chosen. Cemeteries have differing regulations on the type and style of memorial permitted. You can browse our stone collection and styles in our memorials pages, or visit one of our branches to view the stones and talk to one of our advisors in person. We can help you choose a memorial that is both fitting for your needs and meets the local cemetery's regulations.

Choosing an inscription

We will assist you in choosing a suitable inscription for you chosen stone. We can show you examples of styles that work well and provide suggestions for the inscription text if you wish. View our pages on inscription and decorative ideas.

Different faiths

We make memorials for a range of faiths and understand and respect the customs associated with these. We will do our utmost to provide a service that is fitting for your faith and the memorial arrangements you need. Our memorials range is arranged by faith so you can easily browse the styles we offer for each faith.

Arranging installation

Depending on the memorial you choose, it can take several weeks to order, engrave and prepare your stone for installation. We will advise you when the stone can be ready and arrange an installation date with you if you wish to specify this.

Maintenance of your memorial

Once your memorial is erected you should take care of it to ensure it remains in good condition in the years to come. We will advise you on the best methods for cleaning and caring for your memorial. Often, general upkeep of the plot on which the memorial rests is handled by the cemetery. We also provide a cleaning and restoration service.
